~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The lessons—all ten of them!—plus the Final Fun Quiz, have been completed in a ‘Plain Jane Edition.’ Mr. Larry Knoll, our Elementary Education Consultant, has taken this ‘Edition’ and transformed the lessons into a beautiful PowerPoint Presentation.
The lessons, along with the 2 x 3 ft. floor/table colorful Jigsaw Puzzle Map of the United States, is available to all elementary school teachers and, especially, to those teachers who are involved in the Geography classroom in Private, Public, Religious, or Home Schools.
A Geography teacher/instructor must be able to teach an important and challenging subject and bring to life a course full of excitement and adventure to all students. I believe that students are curious and fascinated in finding out about the Wonderful World Around Us!
Each lesson in the Geography Fun! Program has been carefully prepared for your students. After you have covered these delightful lessons and taken the Final Fun Quiz, you will find below a few of the exciting, challenging, and innovative experiences your students have encountered along the way:
- Where the lower 48 states are located on the U. S. map.
- The capital city of each state.
- The product(s) for which the states are best known.
- The different Time Zones in the United States.
- Why it is 10 a.m. in California and 2 p.m. in Florida at the same
time on the same day.
- Alaska and Hawaii’s Time Zones…why they are in different
Time Zones than the other states.
- ‘Scrambling’ and ‘Unscrambling’ the States—a fun game
- ‘Revolve Around the Sun and Rotate on its Axis’—an exciting
action game.
- How’s Your Memory? – a fun quiz
- The meaning of ‘agriculture’ and ‘agribusiness’.
- Taking a field trip.
- ‘Creative Writing’—a short story telling what students learned
on their field trip.
- A ‘Best Story Contest.’
- Putting the 2’ x 3’ Jigsaw Puzzle together—lots of fun!
- An old-fashioned Spelling Bee—“Wanna join the 100 Club?”
- Surverying, listing, visiting companies in local neighborhoods
and . . . much, much more!!
Does this sound like a stimulating and thought-provoking subject to you? Our challenge to the teacher… to make Geography the most exciting subject students will be discovering in the classroom!
Geography Fun Power Point Presentations
ABOUT LARRY KNOLL . . .
Mr. Knoll taught grades 2 through 6 in Rockford, Illinois for over 31 years. After retirement in Illinois, he came to Colorado and is now serving as Intervention Specialist at Falcon Elementary School of Technology in Falcon, near Colorado Springs. He has joined our Geography Fun! Program Team as our Elementary Education Consultant.
A SUCCESS STORY . . .
Christina Harrison, a third grade teacher at Falcon Elementary School of Technology, in Falcon, Colorado, has been teaching the Geography Fun! Program to her 25 students. Below, you will find her ‘Overview of the Program.’
OVERVIEW OF THE GEOGRAPHY FUN! PROGRAM . . .
My students really enjoyed the lessons. They were all very engaged and had fun learning (which I love to see happening!) The technology piece of the interactive states/capitals web site that we used on a SMARTBoard really caught their interest, and the students were very excited when they got a chance to match their state with the correct state on the SMARTBoard. You
will find the SMARTBoard web site at:
www.yourchildlearns.am/us_map.htm
The kinesthetic piece of this lesson was wonderful, too. My students had a great time searching around the room for the correct state, and they were even a little competitive to be the first one to find the correct state.
So, as I said, these lessons had all the students highly engaged, which means that they are learning.
On the teacher planning side of things, the lessons were very teacher-friendly and easy to follow and implement. On a scale of 1-10, I would definitely give it a 10!
Keep up the good work!
TRAVELING AROUND THE STATES GAME . . .
Christina, using her creativity and imagination has created TRAVELING AROUND THE STATES GAME. She has added a new dimension to our program by introducing this great idea of having teachers ‘make up’ their own games. From her idea, we have added a section to our overall program, GAMES TEACHERS PLAY.
AN INVITATION TO TEACHERS . . .
Teachers who have used, or are using the Geography Fun! Program, are invited to create their own games, and, if they would like, submit the games with step-by-step instructions to us.
These games will be added to the new section of our program, GAMES TEACHERS PLAY. Your games could be useful in introducing the program to other teachers who will be using the Geography Fun! Program in the future.
If you would like credit for your game(s), please give your name, name of your school, grade level, and the number of students you teach.
Please e-mail your game(s) to: egwhites@juno.com.
STUDENT EVALUATIONS:
Student comments about Elga’s lessons so far have been:
"Awesome!"
"Fun!"
"Outstandingly fun!"
"Fantastic!"
"I'm teaching this to my younger nephew!"
A Sample Evaluation:
Five students gave the 'game' 10 stars out of 10;
one student gave the 'game' 8 stars out of 10..
For a look at the map which you will be receiving after the lessons are complete, please follow the following link:
